No Time for Yoga, I Have a House to Run!

Updated: Apr 16, 2025

As a yoga teacher, I hear this all the time from moms: "Yoga class? Yeah, right! Between cooking, cleaning, laundry, and chasing after kids, who has time for that? If I find an hour for yoga, I would rather take a nap."

And honestly, I get it. Motherhood is a full-time job—often more than full-time—and it leaves very little space for "me time." But here’s a little secret: you don’t need to carve out a full hour or roll out a mat every day to enjoy the benefits of yoga. In fact, yoga can blend seamlessly into your daily life—right alongside your household chores. Let’s explore how: 1. Cleaning Utensils = Mindful Breathing + Posture Check

Instead of scrubbing dishes on autopilot, turn this moment into a quick reset.

  • Stand tall, soften your knees, and roll your shoulders back.

  • Engage your core gently.

  • Practice deep breathing: inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4.

Notice the warm water, the sensation of your hands moving—this is mindfulness in action.

Benefit: This small shift helps reduce back pain, improves posture, and calms the mind.

2. Cooking = A Chance to Stretch

Waiting for the pressure cooker or water to boil? Perfect time to stretch.

  • Stand in Tadasana (Mountain Pose) with feet hip-width apart.

  • Do gentle side stretches or a slow spinal twist.

  • Use the kitchen counter for a calf or hamstring stretch.

Benefit: Eases stiffness, improves blood circulation, and brings awareness to your body—even while prepping dinner.

3. Laundry = Built-in Squats & Forward Folds

Bending down to pick up clothes or load the machine? Turn those movements into intentional poses.

  • Instead of hunching, squat fully (Malasana or yogi squat) to lift items.

  • Stretch hamstrings by folding forward with a straight spine when reaching low.

Benefit: Strengthens legs, tones the core, and stretches the lower back—no gym required.

4. Brushing Your Teeth = Balance Time

Those two minutes in front of the mirror? Use them to boost stability.

  • Stand on one leg in Tree Pose (Vrksasana).

  • Switch legs after a minute.

  • Engage your core and gently gaze at one point for better balance.

Benefit: Improves focus, strengthens legs and core, and turns routine into a mindful moment.

5. Watching TV = Seated Yoga Time

Even your screen time can become more nourishing.

  • Sit in Butterfly Pose or cross-legged.

  • Add gentle spinal twists or neck rolls.

  • Loosen your shoulders between episodes.

Benefit: Relieves tension from the day, promotes flexibility, and keeps your joints mobile.

Yoga Is Already Part of Your Day—You Just Have to Notice It

The truth is, yoga doesn’t have to be a separate “activity” you squeeze into your schedule. It’s a way of moving, breathing, and being more present—in everything you do.

Small, intentional movements can have a big impact when done with awareness.

And if you're ready to learn simple techniques that actually fit into your routine, there are programs out there tailored exactly for that kind of lifestyle. (Dheeryoga specialize in that.)

Whether it’s 5 minutes or 15, what matters is consistency—not perfection.

So the next time you think you’re too busy for yoga, remember: you’re probably already doing it. All you need now is to make it a little more mindful.
